Eibar Town Hall through different means is keen to encourage cultural diversity and wishes to provide its citizens with a wide range of cultural activities aimed at highlighting cultural themes from all over the world.The Town Hall recognises that the people living in Durango come from many different backgrounds and that the Town Hall should promote and highlight this cultural richness.
The Culture Department offers an annual programme that aims to cover the citizens' interests and tastes giving them the chance to get involved. The activies organised are aimed at children, young people and adults: Exhibitions, Worshops, Cinema, Theatre, Music and Dance, Conferences, Themed Weeks, Street Programmes, Fairs, Fiestas and Leisure time activities…
The following activities are among the most important to be found in the annual programme:
Portalea
Portalea is the Culture Centre in Eibar, converted in the 1980s from the former AYA arms factory. It houses the Juan San Martín Library, an exhibition room, an assembly hall, meeting rooms, a dance studio, workshops (cooking, photography, printing and handicrafts), and the Arms Industry Museum. Several municipal schools are also located in the building.
Portalea is the Culture Centre in Eibar having been reconverted in the 1980s from the old arms factory “AYA”. Inside it houses the Juan San Martín Library, an exhibition room, a conference hall, meeting rooms, a dance studio, workshops (cooking, photography, printing, hand crafts) and the Arms Industry Museum. The Arms Industry Museum is on the fifth floor of Portalea. Its remit is the conservation of the town’s industrial patrimony and the dissemination of the historical memory of Eibar which had an important tradition in the manufacture of arms. The visitor can enjoy a journey through the industrial history and technological evolution of Eibar from the XIV century until the present day.
Coliseo
The Coliseo is a live entertainment space and cinema. It has three areas, one is a theatre with a capacity for five hundred people. The other two areas can hold eighty people in each one.
Every year around eighty events are held (concerts, theatre and dance) and approximately one hundred and twenty films are shown.
